lantern
on a
globe
on
which
he
leans
his
right
elbow
. He
points
with his
left
arm
, his
mouth
open
as if
declaiming
, to the
vision
thrown
upon
a
curtain
,
which
is
an
allegorical
representation
of
revolution
in
America
. He
addresses
four
figures
personifying
the
four
quarters
of the
world
. On the
left
, the
females
Europe
and
Asia
sit
side
by
side
,
Asia's
arm
on
Europe's
shoulder
.
Asia
holds
on her
lap
a
censer
from
which
pour
clouds
of
incense
.
Europe
wears
a
plumed
helmet
and has a
spear
and
shield
on
which
is
a
horse
.
Both
wear
pseudoclassical
draperies
.
Africa
, a
black
woman
wearing
a
turban
,
stands
behind
Europe
gazing
in
horror
at the
vision
.
America
on the
right
,
represented
by an
Indian
man
,
sits
on a
bale
of
goods
with
another
bale
behind
him. These
represent
the
commerce
of the
colonies
. He
is
in
three-quarter
back
view
looking
up
at the
vision
. He
wears
a
feathered
headdress
and
is
partially
draped
, with
bare
arms
and
legs
. He
holds
a
bow
in his
left
hand
, a
quiver
of
arrows
slung
on his
back
. In the
center
of the
scene
projected
on the
curtain
is
a
teapot
placed
over
a
fire
in
which
stamped
documents
are
burning
. An
unmanned
bellows
lies
below
. The
contents
of the
teapot
are
exploding
, and a
serpent
and a
cap
of
liberty
on its
pole
are
being
shot
from the
pot
into the
air
surrounded
by
rays
of
light
and
clouds
of
smoke
. This
represents
the
consequences
of the
tax
on
tea
.
Beneath
the
clouds
of
smoke
under
the
fire
is
a
prostrate
lion
and,
below
, a
torn
flag
[with
three
leopards]
representing
the
British
royal
standard
. By
it
lies
the
head
of a
spiked
club
, its
handle
broken
. On the
right
,
three
beasts
of
prey
are
fighting
. They
appear
to be a
lion
, a
bear
, and a
wolf
.
Within
the
circle
on the
left
,
American
soldiers
are
advancing
with a
[striped]
flag
[on
which
is
a
serpent]
.
Before
them
advances
an
allegorical
female
figure
of
America
wearing
an
Indian
headdress
and
holding
a
bow
in her
right
hand
. Her
left
hand
seems
to be
about
to
grasp
the
cap
and
staff
of
liberty
shooting
up
from the
exploding
teapot
.
Behind
her
is
a
mounted
officer
with a
drawn
sword
followed
by
soldiers
with
fixed
bayonets
. The
muzzles
of
two
cannons
are also
visible
with a
man
holding
a
cannon
ball
. On the
right
British
soldiers
are
fleeing
in
disorder
, the
heads
of the
rearmost
men
being
under
a
yoke
. A
storm
of
darts
of
lightning
rages
over
their
heads
. The
heavily
festooned
curtain
shows
pillars
on the
left
, and on the
wall
behind
them
is
a
picture
on
tapestry
the
subject
of
which
is
not
discernable
.

the

is

shows
to the
four
parts
of the
world
that the
tempest
which
the
English
have
stirred
up
has
turned
back
on
themselves
and
is
going
to
hand
over
to
America
the
means
of
seizing
the
cap
of
Liberty
. A
satire
on the
uprising
in
America
caused
by the
imposition
by the
British
of the
tax
on
tea
in
1767
. The
tea
duty
was
rescinded
in
England
in
1774
[sic]
but was
maintained
in the
colonies
provoking
the
Boston
Tea
Party
of
December
16
,
1773
. The
engraving
is
probably
the
same
as

in the
British
Museum
Catalogue
of
Political
and

. The
engraving
is
a
reduced
version
in
reverse
of
