Subject : Russian revolutionary Paul Pestel (1794-1826) in his prison cell scratching lines of music into the wall . Beneath the image is the caption : "The martyrdom of Colonel Pestal [sic] by the Russian government , has been rendered immortal by the exquisite melody he engraved on the wall of his dungeon , with a link of his chain on the night previous to execution. "
