Sheet music can be digitized upon request . Title continues : By Genl.William O.Butler . Most respectfully dedicated to Mrs . James K.Polk and composed by H.Thorbecke . Butler , a hero of the Mexican War , was Lewis Cass's vice-presidential running mate on the Democratic ticket in the 1848 election . The words are from a poem by Butler titled The Boatman's Horn published in a collection titled The Boatman's Horn and Other Poems . Music copyrighted by H.Thorbecke in 1848 .
