Although Boston’s population was politically diverse during the nineteenth century , the city was a welcoming hub for many social reform organizations , including dozens of active and often militant temperance societies . A number of factors contributed to a rise in alcohol abuse in the nineteenth century : increasing availability of liquor , impure water supplies , and changing social norms . In response to the “despotism of alcohol,” temperance societies initially advocated moderation , but their tone became shriller as the century progressed with many of their leaders calling for total abstinence and even prohibition . As in this Currier & Ives print of 1881 , many temperance advocates believed that a single glass of wine could lead to alcoholic depravity . In the 1881 Annual Report of the Massachusetts Total Abstinence Society , readers were warned about the “wine-drinking saloon” where “thousands of our young men , and women , too , are ruined every year by the increasing use of.. . lighter wines in the fashionable social circle[s].”
