Full-length portraits of a seated elderly woman and two younger ladies , one seated and one standing . The older woman wears a white bonnet and holds a book . The two younger women , possibly sisters , wear the same dress . The younger seated woman holds a scroll in her right hand . The younger woman , who stands between the two seated women , wears a large cross on a long chain .
Notes
This half-plate daguerreotype is attributed to the Boston daguerreotypist John Adams Whipple based on studio furniture . Daguerreotype is covered by a plain double elliptical mat with an ornate protector and is housed in a daguerreotype case made of wood and covered in reddish-brown leather with an unidentified scroll design and two hook and eye clasps on the side . On the inside of the case , a rose-colored silk pad faces the daguerreotype . Daguerreotype hallmark : W.H.H . 40 . According to Rinhart in The American daguerreotype (p . 445) , this plate was probably American and produced between 1848 and 1853 . Plate has been resilvered , probably by Whipple . Style of dress confirms circa date . Title created by curator . A quarter-plate daguerreotype by Whipple of the same women in a similar pose is in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum . See (photo) UTB-4 5 (no.4) .
