Collection summary |
A collection of 105 bookplates designed and/or engraved by Sidney Lawton Smith, likely compiled in this album by his daughter, Amy Gertrude Smith. Most of the bookplates are untrimmed with plate marks intact or adhered to large sheets of paper. Many are signed by S.L. Smith and/or stamped in red with his monogram (SLS underscored within an oval). Some appear in varying states or in variant ink colors. Several are proofs, as is evident by their untrimmed state and manuscript annotations "to be returned to Sidney L. Smith, 22 Cumberland St., Boston, Mass." Additionally, a few bear an inscription from S.L. Smith to Amy G. Smith. |
