Central panel depicts 18th century Fleet Street with Johnson and Boswell in the foreground, the latter pointing to the Temple Bar Gate, atop of which have been placed pikes with severed heads (the scene is described in Boswell's Life of Johnson. Cf. Boswell, James. Boswell's Life of Johnson, ed. George Birkbeck Hill (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1887), 2:238); name, quote, and date within border. |
