Caption titles are written in ms . pencil , and numbers (photographer's negative numbers?) appear in the lower left corner in ms . pen . Many photographs are signed in the negative . In addition to the title , author and vol . no. , the front boards are stamped in gilt with the name S.V . Storm , Guatemala , and elaborate rule borders . Executed by Muybridge for the Pacific Mail Steamship Co . Presentation copy given to S.V . Storm sometime between 1875 and 1877 by Muybridge in thanks for legal services rendered . Purchase by the Boston Athenaeum in 1878 from Daniel Lombard . Athenaeum accession #41905 .
