Summary
Interior view of a studio belonging to the Museum of Fine Arts , Boston . The studio is decorated for a memorial service for the painter Otto Grundmann who headed the MFA's School of Drawing and Painting from 1877 to 1890 . Ferns , cattails , and garlands of evergreens adorn the room and Grundmann's paintings are displayed including his self-portrait and A Union Veteran . Seated in the entrance to a smaller room is an unidentified man . Grundmann took a medical leave of absence from his position at the MFA in June of 1890 . He died and was buried in Germany in August 1890 . A memorial service was held in Boston on the weekend of November 22nd , 1890 . This photograph was taken either just before or just after the event . The studio depicted was owned by the Museum of Fine Arts , Boston and located directly behind the MFA's Copley Square building . The studio , previously owned by painter and teacher , Frederick Crowinshield , was purchased by the MFA in 1886 . Grundmann's painting classes were held in the studio but, contrary to the photograph's inscribed title , the room was probably not Grundmann's private studio . At Grundmann's memorial service , the MFA committed itself to building a new bank of studios in his name . The well-known Grundmann Studios were built in the early 1890s on Clarendon Street , a block away from the studio depicted in this photograph . Memorial service described in the Boston Evening Transcript , November 24 , 1890 , page 4 . Photographer unknown . Title inscribed in ink lower edge of mount . #2002.21 .
