The construction of the Tremont Street Subway (now known as the Green Line) was completed in several stages by the Jones and Meehan Company over the span of three and a half years . It included five subway stations and stretched across 2 and 1/4 miles . The first section of the project was completed on September 1 , 1897 and went from the Public Garden entrance to Park Street Station . The remainder of the Tremont Street Subway was completed on September 3 , 1898 and went from Park Street through Scollay , Adams , and Haymarket Square to North Station . The subway was leased by the West End Street Railway Company who also operated Boston's streetcar system .
