Subject : A political cartoon ridiculing the role of African American soldiers in the Civil War . In the foreground , two African Americans soldiers , one in Union uniform and the other in Confederate uniform , greet one another and shake hands . The Union soldier says "Dat you Sam ? Yeah ! Yeah! ' The Confederate soldier responds , "Bress my heart how am you Jim? " Several other African American soldiers , very animated , are lightly sketched in the background .
Notes
This engraving is a copy after a cartoon which first appeared in the September 26 , 1863 issue of Punch (London) . The Punch cartoon bears the monogram of JT (Sir John Tenniel) and has minor differences from the American impression : Sam is referred to as Sambo in the London version ; the Confederate soldier has an "S " on his belt and suspenders in the London version (replaced by "C.S.A. " in the American version) ; the American version adds "and Slavery " to the title continuation . Title continues : "When black meets black then come the end of war " - and slavery . Publisher attribution based on a hand-written inscription on duplicate impression in Library . Thomas W . Strong was also an engraver and may have been responsible for the engraving of the print .
