This group of over 300 bookplates by Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929) contains most of the designs created and engraved by one of the premier American bookplate artists of the early twentieth century. His studio was in Boston and his clients were among the most prominent book collectors of his time. The collection consists of original drawings, signed proofs, and final prints demonstrating Mr. Smith’s extraordinary skill in incorporating the various architectural views, portraits, armorials, and decorative elements used by bibliophiles of the period to identify the ownership of their books and illustrate their tastes and possessions.
