In 2008, James V. Righter, Boston architect and Trustee Emeritus of the Boston Athenæum, generously presented sixty-five sketchbooks, illustrated journals and altered books to the Manuscript Collection. From 1974 through 2004, Jim took a sketchbook with him wherever he traveled. He illustrated landscapes, architecture, local color, flora and fauna, as well as mundane objects like lunch. Jim recorded impressions of his destinations, which included such locations as the coast of Maine, Venice, England, Bermuda, and Cuernavaca, Mexico. Jim used four books by Ernest Seton-Thompson as a platform for his inventive graphic book works/altered books. Using pen and ink, watercolor, appliqué and collage, he created a series of delightful, signed and dated art works.
